Romany
Marriage
and a
Word of Warning

Services

Abstract

Marriage has always been shown as a sacred ritual in most cultures. However, it is a tale of warning used in many ways in Roma cultures. The Roma culture has different subgroups and origins from different countries, yet some oral traditions remain the same. Roma’s views on marriage are different in that marriage isn’t a ritual but an acknowledgment of a developing family. Through stories and songs, we listen to warnings given to future generations, “stay with family.”  Like the Brothers Grimm told morals,  Roma people often use stories about marriage to admonish young people to marry within their culture.

"During a ritual, the world changes, reality can be suspended, and traditions become real tangible experiences that we can actively take part in."
